On Wednesday, 5th August, the Enugu State College of Education Technical hosted a powerful youth outreach programme dedicated to substance abuse and addictions awareness and prevention. The event brought together experts, advocates, and students in a collaborative effort to address one of the most pressing challenges facing young people today.
A Line-up of Distinguished Speakers
The outreach featured an impressive panel of facilitators, including:
-
Consultant Psychiatrists from the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu.
-
Mr. David Folaranmi, Expert by Experience.
-
Mrs. Calista Mmeka, Deputy Chief Narcotics Officer and Officer in Charge of Media and Advocacy, NDLEA Enugu State Command.
-
A Psychiatrist and Mental Health Nurse visiting from the UK.
-
The Dean of Students Affairs and SUG President of the institution.
Their combined expertise offered participants a rich perspective — blending clinical insight, lived experience, legal frameworks, and student advocacy.

Interactive Breakout Sessions
A highlight of the programme was the breakout sessions, designed as a safe space where students could openly share their struggles, personal stories, and questions about drug use. Discussions covered:
-
Prevention strategies to avoid substance abuse.
-
Coping skills for peer pressure and life challenges.
-
Guidance on seeking help and support.
Some students were referred to local hospitals by Afrimedic for further support, ensuring the event went beyond awareness to actual intervention.

Focusing on Recovery and Rehabilitation
The sessions also shed light on recovery pathways, rehabilitation options, and ongoing support services available to those affected. Students were encouraged to see addiction not as a hopeless situation, but as a challenge that can be overcome with the right help and community support.
